Biography
I was born the 3rd oldest of eight children, 5 girls and three boys. Growing up on a farm approximately 5 miles South East of Victoria, Kansas, there was always plenty of work to be done. A typical morning after breakfast, was to herd the cattle from the pasture to the barn to be milked. All of us kids by age of 5 were milking cows. I would help with the milking, than separating the cream, than my other jobs was to gather the fresh eggs the chickens had laid. & sometimes feed the hogs & chickens. After the work was done, I would go inside the house to get ready for school if it were the school season.
Our little country school consisted of “4” students which was my brother Kenneth, myself, & “2” Phillip boys, Jim & Bill. Our teacher taught every subject to us. To get to school, on bad weather days, my brother & I would walk across the pasture & wheat field to get to school. If the weather was really bad & the teacher could not make it to the school, than school was cancelled for that day .On nice days if the roads were dry, Kenny & I each had a “doodle-bug” scooter. It went very slow but sure beat walking. If we walked, crossing across the fields, the walk was about 1-1/2 miles, if we could ride our scooters, it was about 3 miles to school. We never ever were driven to school. When the little country school closed, I was starting the 7th grade. I would be going to Victoria, Kansas to school. By now, I was old enough to drive (age 14,) so Kenny & I drove dad’s old pickup truck every day to & from school. Every morning before school started, all the students were required to go to daily mass, than after mass we would all walk over to the school which was about a block & half away. After school was over & we were back home, there were always many chores to do, plus we had to milk the cows again, plus feed the chickens & hogs, this was a twice a day job, every morning & every evening. After the chores & work was all done for the day, mom would always have a huge supper, everything homemade from scratch. We picked our own vegetables that we planted & grew from the garden & butchered all our own meat. Mom made homemade bread almost every other day. After supper we would do our homework, than every night at 7:30PM the rosary was prayed on the radio. The family knelt down to pray the rosary every single night together.
After the 8th grade I attended Victoria High School. Victoria Kansas is also known as “Herzog”. Victoria has this amazing beautiful Catholic church, St. Fidelis Church, “Cathedral of the Plains”. In 2007, the Kansas Sampler Foundation selected the Cathedral of the Plains Church as one of the eight wonders of Kansas. In high school, I was taught by the same nun who taught my mother when mom was in the 4th grade. She taught all subjects. After high school, the day after graduation, I packed up my small amount of belongings and moved to Hays Kansas where I was hired on at Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. This was in 1956. I moved in with my oldest sister Gloria & her husband Gib until I could rent a small apartment on my own in Hays.
I worked for Southwestern Bell until shortly after my marriage to Warren in 1960. Then I transferred to Denver Co where I continued working for Mountain Bell until I transferred to A.T.&T. I retired after a buyout was offered in 1993 after 36 years of service with the phone company. After being home for 6 months & feeling very restless, I was hired by Medical Consultants Network in Lakewood Co & worked for this company for 8 years before retiring for good. Working a total of 44 ½ years I sure was ready.
My husband Warren & I were blessed with “2” beautiful children, one son Kerry, & a daughter Jackie. Kerry is happily married & living in San Diego Ca with his wife Helen, they do not have any children. Jackie & her great husband Joe, have “2” children, a girl named Morgan & a boy named Nicholas. Our grandchildren are the loves of our lives. We so much enjoy watching them grow up, watching them mature & just being around our grandkids gives us so much pleasure. We absolutely love having Joe, Jackie & the grandkids living in Arvada, Colorado so close to us that we can see & enjoy them as they are such a huge part of our lives.
Warren & I have been married for over 53 years, love to travel and spend as much time with our family as possible. We try to visit Kerry & Helen at least once a year. This year, 2013, they are planning on coming in the week of Thanksgiving which will be a really special family time for us all. Warren & I are charter members of St Jude Catholic Church. I will celebrate my 75th birthday this December 11th & Warren will be 78 on March 7th 2013.
