Jack Edward Wagner, Sr. (Papa Jack), was born on Nov 10, 1923 in Angels Hospital, City of Los Angeles, CA. He married Mary Jeanette Hoffman on Sep 13, 1947. He married Judith (Judy) Berson Sobel on Aug 11, 1997. He died on Jun 2, 2005 in Channel Islands, Ventura, CA.

He was raised on a farm in the southwest region of the City of Los Angeles. It included the ten acre home site at the corner of Manchester Blvd., and Western Ave. He attended the Catholic grammar school, St Michaels, at Manchester and Vermont. He attended and graduated from Mount Carmel High School at Florence and Hoover in 1941. He was attending Loyola University in Winchester when he was called into the service of the U.S. Navy in 1943. He was sent to the University of Texas, and completed his Midshipman's School at Endicott, RI.

He was commissioned an Ensign in the Civil Engineering Corps, and spent his oversea tour of duty in the Philippine Islands and Truk Island Pacific, where he was attached to the 42nd NCB's, a part of the 100th Regiment of the Pacific Island Seabees. He returned home in late 1945, and returned to USC, to complete his education as a Civil Engineer. He graduated in September 1947, and was married ten days later. He became a Registered Civil Engineer, RE 11288, in 1953, and practiced his profession in the County's of Los Angeles, and Ventura for 40 years. He retired in 1988. and enjoys his beach, marina , recreational vehicle, and golf courses in the County of Ventura. until late in life.

After his wife's death in 1994, he moved to the family beach house at Silverstrand, Channel Islands Marina, and enjoyed a leisured retirement life of a beach resident. In 1997 he married his next door neighbor of twenty five years and expects to continue enjoying the "good life," well into the 21st century.

Dear Dad,

Throughout any one’s life, we all travel with a similar question:
How many people will show-up at my funeral?
Your children have been asking this about you all week.

But this is never really a numeric question, even for the consummate engineer that you that always were. It is really much more about:

Did I have an impact on this earth?
Did I leave a mark?
Did I leave a few footprints in the sand on my beach?

Dad… let me report that you did exceptionally well !

Even a quick glance over this group tells everyone that you left your mark and, with a deeper review, a more personal review, we discover that every one of us gathered here is excited to tell at least one story of how we knew you, ….how you impacted our lives.

Many would share a story of great support and encouragement.
Many would remember a time of mentorship and inspiration.
Some would tell of having their butt kicked by you and what an SOB you could be but even they, and I, too, would finish the story of how you moved each of us along in some difficult, or simply clumsy, chapter of our lives.

I know ALL your children could EASILY share many stories in each and ALL of these categories. Even our names tell of the story to be told of the preview of each of our destinies:

Michael John - the Archangel; the combatant defender of the family
Richard Lee - the lionhearted; the negotiator
Paul Thomas - the apostle; the converted, yet wandering, centurion
Damian Edward - the doctor; the missionary with little concern for self
Daniel Joseph - the lion tamer; the deep believer, puzzled in the arena of life
Joseph Christopher - Christ’s earthly father; the traveler’s guide
Jack Edward - your beloved namesake; like John, the wanderer in the wilderness
Marie Lynnette - Christ’s mother; now our matriarch, proven already this week

So dad…Which one of us did you love the most?

We know this answer because you told us.
When, as a child, I asked this same question of you, your answer was quick and clear.

The child you loved the most was
…the child that was sick;
…the child that was injured;
…the child that was sad
…the child that was away;

Clearly you loved ALL of us the most!

Let’s talk to mom! the saint that has gone before us all.
Well, mom, here he comes.
(And if the good Lord has asked you to pave his way, the Lord and I are gona’ have some words, ‘cuz you did all your pavin’ work down here.)
But now mom with all our love, we deliver to you that man you always called “your white knight”.

By the way mom, dad eloped with a younger girl a while back.
Judy is a women to whom we have all grown to love and appreciate as she and dad built a new life together. She has been a great companion, and wife, over the years for which your children will always be grateful.

Dear Dad…
Lest you have any doubt, we want you to know that:
you have been a great father to ALL your children;
you have been a wonderful husband to both your brides;
you have been you have been a fantastic grandfather to all your grand children;
a wonderful neighbor, friend, employer and companion.

Dad…
You did leave your mark and you can now look back upon it with joy.

Dear God Almighty.
We ask with great acclaim that you accept these words, and this gathering, as testaments to the qualifications of this soul.
If a little purgatory is needed, we would understand. So then let Thy will be done.
We ask that you bring our father into Your home, bless his work on this earth and grant him a portal to your Everlasting Kingdom.
