My early memory of the farm is sitting othe porch with mom and dad on a summer evening. Dad would point out the stars, especially the falling stars. Mom and Dad would tel us to listen to the birds sing. Donna and I would chase fire flies and put them in a jar and watch them light up.
Mom an Dad loved the land and their farm. When Dad worked the fields and it was lunch time, Mom woud step out on the porch and wave a white towel so Dad know it was time to come home. When he worked the "Eighty", Mom would put us in the little red wagon and we we would wak to the field with lunch.
We milked cows by hand - we had fun miling and quirting milk to the waiting cat.
Mom had chickens, turkeys and ducks and a huge garden. We had duck for a special meal and that was Dad's favorite. We also had hogs for the butchery. Mom and Dad did that together. She helped Dad with everything. Dad liked fixing things. He bought older machinery, repair and paint it so it looked and worked like new.
Mom made all the clothes and it always looked so nice. She also made the best bread and rolls. I don't know how she got it all done. Late summer we would go the the pasture with our big white horse "Tom" and the wagon and gather cow chips for heating our home. I remember the grashopper dust storm. We had an opening in the kitchen floor with a ladder leading to a tunnel under the house. This let to the cellar where we waited until storms past and the coast was clear. Mom had all her canned goods there. We had our watermellon stored there. It was fun to spend time there.
There are so many memories of home but most important was seeing Mom always there working with Dad and seeing how they cared for each other.
